Sex Pistols Number 1

Julien Temple, documentary and music video director, began his career following the Pistols and filming many of their early gigs. Temple was born in Kensington, an exclusive part of London. He went to Cambridge University, where he developed an interest in French film. This, along with his interest in the early punk scene in London in 1976, led to a friendship with the Sex Pistols.

Temple became connected to the Sex Pistols and was fascinated with the whole punk ethos. When interviewed by Lawrence Chua (2000) for Bomb magazine at the time of the release of his Pistols documentary The Filth and the Fury, Temple said of the Pistols’ influence:

they changed not only my life, but most of the conditions that dictate how you can work and what you can do in the U.K. Without them, the British film industry, which is now mainly driven by young people, wouldn’t have happened. . . . The same goes with London fashion. That whole street fashion thing came from the Pistols, really. They changed what was possible to achieve when you were young. . . . the Sex Pistols were always far more to me than a rock band. Nothing since them has been as extremely or powerfully stated.
